Mrs HB was taken there for her birthday, and from the moment we stepped through the door, it felt like the kind of independent restaurant that understands hospitality instinctively. A genuinely warm welcome – not rehearsed, not performative – but sincere and effortless. We were invited to sit by the open fireplace while we looked at the menu, the crackle of logs and the low hum of conversation setting the tone before a single plate reached the table.

After our fireside welcome, we were escorted to our table – carefully positioned to offer privacy while still feeling cocooned within the warmth of the restaurant. It’s a small but telling detail. At Pequena Mundo, space is understood, pace is respected, and guests are allowed to settle in.

The dining room has that rare quality that only comes with time: it feels lived-in rather than styled, comfortable rather than curated. Regulars are greeted warmly, service moves smoothly without interruption, and the atmosphere is relaxed yet quietly confident.

That is absolutely not the case here.

At Restaurante Pequeno Mundo, classic Portuguese dishes are treated with respect and real skill. The food is generous but precise, comforting yet carefully executed. Every plate arriving at neighbouring tables looked inviting – the kind of food that makes you reconsider your own order.

We began with foie gras. Not to everyone’s taste, perhaps, but here it was perfectly cooked – rich without being overwhelming, balanced and confident. A dish that demonstrated restraint, experience and trust in good ingredients.

For our main course, we chose the steak – and it was outstanding. Perfectly cooked, full of flavour, properly rested, and served without fuss. No gimmicks. No unnecessary embellishment. Just excellent cooking, done well.

To finish, we had a simple lemon sorbet. Clean, sharp, refreshing and utterly delicious. A reminder that when simplicity is executed properly, it can be the most satisfying end to a meal.
